BEHIND THE DESIGN: BEATRIZ PALACIOS FOR AROUND THE WORLD
Q: How has your home country and native culture influenced your designs?
A: I think it is or certainly was in the past a part of Spanish culture for the women to be creative and self sufficient. Traditionally in Spain, Madrid also had the greatest supply of materials for dress making and design. Also, my mother has had a strong influence in my work since I was a little girl by creating my own pieces out of the beads and fabric left from my mother’s more elaborate designs. So I guess it is something I have always been around due to my mother and also my city.
Q: What do you love most about Spain?
A: If the solar system was Spain, the dinner table would be the sun which everything rotates around. When I am in the process of creating a new collection, I bring the work as it develops home to my parents’ house and discuss the pieces with my mother and sisters. These are the things I love most about Spain, the culture of family and food.
Q: How would you describe Spanish’s signature style?
A: This is a very difficult question to answer because the culture and history of Spain is so deep and rich. I would say that the signature style would reflect the Baroque and modernist architecture and a bold use of color and materials.
Q: How would you describe your design aesthetic?
A: I have made jewelry now for the past fifteen years and the influences in my work have been varied and quite diverse. More recently, my aesthetics have been influenced by modern art at the turn of the last century in Europe such as Suprematism in Russia and the Art and Craft movement in Scandinavia and Britain.
Q: Do your pieces feature unique materials or design processes?
A: The design processes are unique in the sense that the prototypes are created as single pieces of art. Each of these works are hand crafted by myself and a small group of seasoned artisans at my workshop in Madrid. It takes at least three months to develop each collection after the elements have been decided. The pieces are created from raw materials such as camel bone and semi precious stones.
